Verification, Display Name & Green Tick

Three things people often mix up — Business Verification, Display Name approval and the green tick (Official Business Account) — what each one does and whether you need it.

"Is my number verified?" can mean three completely different things. Here's how to tell them apart.

1. Display name#

The name customers see at the top of the chat. Meta reviews it against your business (it should match your brand, website or signage). A display name can be approved or rejected without business verification.

Do you need it? Yes — every number has one.

2. Business Verification#

Meta checks that your company is real, using documents such as GST certificate, Udyam registration, shop licence or utility bill, and a website or domain that matches. It's done in Meta Business Suite → Settings → Security Center.

Do you need it? Not to start. Unverified businesses can message customers right away, but with a lower starting limit on how many new people they can message per day. Verification is the usual first step to unlock higher limits — see Quality rating & messaging limits.

3. Green tick (Official Business Account)#

A verified badge next to your name. Meta grants it to notable brands — businesses that are widely recognised, usually shown through press coverage. It is applied for separately, after Business Verification, and approval is not guaranteed.

Do you need it? No. Most successful WhatsApp businesses never get the green tick. It doesn't change your sending limits or your costs.
